Singer, songwriter, civil rights activist, and Soul pioneer Sam Cooke was born on this day in 1931. In the summer of 1964, a few months before his death in December, Sam Cooke began a residency at Club Harlem in Atlantic City, New Jersey. While there, he developed a close relationship with dancer Betty Jo Spyropulos, pictured with Cooke in this photo.
