This slide is part of a collection of 35mm slides encapsulating Robert Houston's full portfolio of images related to the Poor People's Campaign and the antipoverty protest camp on the National Mall. Known as "Resurrection City," the camp lasted for six weeks in the spring of 1968.This photographic slide depicts Reverend Kirkpatrick strumming a guitar. Wearing a dark blue button down shirt over a tan shirt, he carries the guitar on a strap over his left shoulder. He is surrounded by a group of men who all gaze at sheets of paper held in their hands. These sheets of paper have text and images on them. There are trees in the background. With the transparency was a protective plastic sleeve with a sticker on the lower left corner with both handwrittten and stamped text.

A program for a performance by Marian Anderson signed by the artist. The cover also includes a full-length photograph of Anderson performing. The contents include several photographs of the artist and a reprint of an article about Anderson's relationship with her mother.Transcribed by digital volunteers

LP of Black Power/Jazz Poetry classic by pianist, singer/songwriter and Black Panther Party leader Elaine Brown. The album contains political songs written by Brown as well as the Black Panther Party National Anthem, "The Meeting." The LP cover art, designed by BPP Minister of Culture, Emory Douglas, features purple and black graphics of a woman with an AK-47 assault rifle and photos of children along the bottom. Bottom left corner shows party member with a flag portrait of "Elaine."

A black leather bomber style jacket worn by Gil Scott-Heron. The jacket zips at the center front. The cuffs, hem, and neck are all made from a black ribbed double knit synthetic fiber with elasticity. There are two (2) welted inset pockets, one at each exterior waist. The jacket is fully lined with black synthetic fabric. There are two (2) interior inset pockets, one at each breast. The pocket at the interior proper left breast closes with one (1) metal snap. There is one (1) interior patch pocket made from black leather sewn at the proper left waist, with the words "Jos. A. / Bank" stamped on the leather. A black manufacturer's tag is sewn at the interior center back with white embroidered text reading "Jos. A. / BANK / ESTABLISHED 1905 / L / REG / MADE IN / CHINA". A care and fiber content tag is sewn at the interior proper left waist side seam. Two dry cleaner's paper tag are safety pinned to the interior proper right waist. A braided leather hanger loop is attached at the interior center back neck.

This cap was made by Kangol and worn by hip hop pioneer, Grandmaster Flash. It is a 504 style cap made of black and white fabric with embroidery at the back of the cap of a yellow lightning bolt through a silver phonograph record with the name GM Flash.Grandmaster Flash (Joseph Saddler), was born in Barbados in 1958. Growing up in the Bronx, he was influenced by his father’s massive record collection. As a teenager, Grandmaster Flash first experimented with DJ equipment and became involved in the New York DJ scene while attending daytime technical school courses in electronics. The innovations and techniques developed by Grandmaster Flash established him as one of the pioneers of hip hop and deejaying.The Kangol brand was started in 1938 in England and the name comes from the “k” in knit, the “ang” from angora, and the “ol” from wool. During WWII the company supplied hats to British soldiers and in the 1960s the hats would be reinterpreted by designers Pierre Cardin and Mary Quant. Kangol hats were popularized in the 1980s by hip hop artists like Grandmaster Flash, LL Cool J, Run DMC, and Slick Rick.Currently not on view

A red jumpsuit with a red vest worn by James Brown. The jumpsuit (2008.7.3.1) is red with long sleeves. The sleeves have geometric square patterns from shoulder to cuff in gold printed fabric. The vest (2008.7.3.2) is knee length and has two geometric square patterns running vertically on the front. It also has two buttons and a plunging collar. The designs begin at hem of the vest and extend to where the cuffs of the jumpsuit would begin when worn.

A costume comprised of a teal dress (.1), a light green vest (.2), and a light green hat (.3) worn by Diana Ross as Billie Holiday in the Paramount Pictures produced 1972 film "Lady Sings the Blues".
