Shofar

The shofar, one of the earliest known musical instruments, is usually made from a ram's horn. Used in biblical times to signal important events, it is also blown on High Holy Days (10 days in the fall of the year). It is sounded many times during the services of Rosh ha-Shanah (the Jewish New Year) and once to conclude Yom Kippur (the Day of Atonement).The blasts of the instrument are meant to wake slumbering souls to review their actions of the past year, to make amends, and to renew their devotion to work for the social and communal good in the coming year. This shofar is of a form typical of central European instruments, with a straightened shaft and flattened mouthpiece. It belonged to Curator Cyrus Adler's grandfather, Leopold Sulzberger, who was born in Germany. Sulzberger arrived in the United States in 1838, and died in 1881.Currently not on view

Garth Brooks' Takamine Guitar

This guitar was made by Takamine Gakki Ltd. in Nakatsugawa, Gifu, Japan in 1990. Takamine began as a small family company in the early 1960s. Artisan and master luthier, Mass Hirade joined the company in 1968 to help Takamine improve the overall quality of their guitars. Hirade strengthened the business and in 1975 partnered with the U.S. based company, Kaman Music Corporation, to begin exporting Takamine guitars internationally.This guitar, serial #90031116, was used by American country musician Garth Brooks for his first NBC-TV special, “This Is Garth Brooks,” at the Reunion Arena in Dallas, Texas in 1991. During the taping of the program, Brooks and fellow musician Ty England smashed two guitars together on stage. Brooks’ guitar was reassembled and donated to the Smithsonian in 2007.Currently not on view

After their capture in Manila by Japanese forces in January 1942 and 16 months in internment camps, Carl and Shelly Mydans finally touched American soil in late 1943. Mydans' first assignment for LIFE magazine after his repatriation was a story on Japanese internment camps on the U.S. West Coast.Following the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, U.S. citizens of Japanese ancestry living in the United States were removed from their homes and relocated to isolated inland areas in California and other western states. This man was one of 155 "pressure boys," men loyal to Japan who had been involved in various riots in November the previous year. Mydans reported that the boy was singing Home on the Range as he entered the barracks. "He sang it like an American. There was no Japanese accent. He looked at me the same way I guess I looked at a Japanese official when he came to check on me at Camp Santo Tomás in Manila. At the back of my mind was the thought, 'Come on, get it over and get out. Leave me alone.' This boy felt the same way. He was just waiting, killing time" (LIFE, March 20, 1944, p.31).Currently not on view

This ten Brixton pound note, designed by Charlie Waterhouse and Clive Paul Russell in 2011, features Brixton-born musician David Bowie in his iconic Ziggy Stardust guise.

Vibraphone, used by Lionel Hampton

This vibraphone, used by Lionel Hampton, was made by Musser in Elkhardt, Indiana, around 1980. It is a three-octave, M75 Century model, with gold finished bars, gold lacquered resonators, and covered wood end panels.

American jazz vibraphonist, percussionist, and bandleader Lionel Leo Hampton (1908 - 2002) began his music career playing drums and took up the vibraphone in the late 1920s. After stints with Louis Armstrong, Nat Shilkret and his Orchestra, and the Benny Goodman Orchestra, Hampton formed his own orchestra in the early 1940s and would lead various incarnations of his group well into the late 1980s. Hampton donated this vibraphone to the Smithsonian in 2001 shortly before his death.

This clarinet was made by Buffet-Crampon & Cie in Paris, France in 1967. It is a Boehm System clarinet in A, serial #96509, made of ebony with German silver plated keys and rings. This clarinet is stamped:

Benjamin David “Benny” Goodman (1909-1986), American jazz and classical clarinetist, and bandleader, purchased this clarinet from the shop of W. Hans Moenning of Philadelphia in 1968.

Goodman, while best known for jazz, commissioned several major works of chamber and symphonic music for clarinet including Contrasts by Béla Bartók, Derivations for Clarinet and Band by Morton Gould, and the Clarinet Concerto by Aaron Copland.

Chet Atkin’s Haile Guitar

Hascal Haile of Tompkinsville, Kentucky made this guitar in 1972. Hascal "Hack" Haile (1906-1986) began making guitars professionally after retiring from furniture making in the late 1960s. He made guitars for many classical and country musicians and was considered to be among the world’s top makers of custom guitars. This six course (6x1) guitar has a top of Spanish pine, back and sides of Spanish cypress, and a maple neck. The guitar’s edge and soundhole is inlaid with abalone and ebony. Country musician, Chet Atkins previously owned and played this guitar and owned several Haile guitars throughout his career.Currently not on view

Kangol Cap, worn by DJ Grandmaster Flash

This cap was made by Kangol and worn by hip hop pioneer, Grandmaster Flash. It is a 504 style cap made of black and white fabric with embroidery at the back of the cap of a yellow lightning bolt through a silver phonograph record with the name GM Flash.Grandmaster Flash (Joseph Saddler), was born in Barbados in 1958. Growing up in the Bronx, he was influenced by his father’s massive record collection. As a teenager, Grandmaster Flash first experimented with DJ equipment and became involved in the New York DJ scene while attending daytime technical school courses in electronics. The innovations and techniques developed by Grandmaster Flash established him as one of the pioneers of hip hop and deejaying.The Kangol brand was started in 1938 in England and the name comes from the “k” in knit, the “ang” from angora, and the “ol” from wool. During WWII the company supplied hats to British soldiers and in the 1960s the hats would be reinterpreted by designers Pierre Cardin and Mary Quant. Kangol hats were popularized in the 1980s by hip hop artists like Grandmaster Flash, LL Cool J, Run DMC, and Slick Rick.Currently not on view

Work Table Piano

The maker of this piano is unknown, but it is thought to have been made in Germany or Austria in the 1840s. This is a small square piano contained in a work table, which has receptacles in the top of the case for sewing implements. Such multi-purpose instruments illustrate the importance of the piano to the training of women in the 19th century. The piano has a compass of F-f3, Viennese action, white leather on wood core hammers, iron strings, single- and double-strung, wood frame, and a rosewood case.Currently not on view (box of parts; compartment)
