Benjamin David “Benny” Goodman (1909-1986), American jazz and classical clarinetist, and bandleader, purchased this clarinet from the shop of W. Hans Moenning of Philadelphia in 1968. The clarinet was made by Buffet-Crampon & Cie in Paris, France in 1967. Goodman, while best known for jazz, commissioned several major works of chamber and symphonic music for clarinet including Contrasts by Béla Bartók, Derivations for Clarinet and Band by Morton Gould, and the Clarinet Concerto by Aaron Copland.
