Opernhaus Zürich "Pagliacci" Poster

April 23 This poster designed by Karl Domenic Geissbühler is for a 1997 production of Pagliacci at the Zürich Opera House. Pagliacci (1892) is an opera by Italian composer Ruggero Leoncavallo (born on this day in 1857). The opera is an early example of the verismo genre, a strand of the literary movement of naturalism. It tells the story of a comedy troupe and the drama and violence that ensues from a love triangle among the actors. The aria “Vesti la giubba” sung by Canio became one of Enrico Caruso’s signature pieces and roles.
