Folio Depicting A Musical Automaton in the Form of a Boat

July 9 Ismail al-Jazari was an inventor, artist, engineer, artisan, and mathematician from the region of Jazira in northern Mesopotamia who lived from 1136–1206 CE. He was renowned for his ingenious hydraulic mechanisms, clocks, and even robots, many of which he explained and illustrated in Kitab fi ma'arifat al-hiyal al-handisaya (the Book of Knowledge of Ingenious Mechanical Devices). This illustration of a musical boat automaton comes from an early 14th century copy of the book.
