May 23 Born on this day in 1919, Ruth Fernández was a Puerto Rican singer, cultural advocate, and politician. She was one of the first Black Puerto Rican women to achieve success as a singer both on the island and in the United States. She was described as “The Soul of Puerto Rico Turned into Song.”
