Conch Shell Trumpet

This conch shell trumpet, painted with fresco designs of human figures and geometric patterns, is believed to have been created between 500 BC and 200 AD. It is attributed to the prehistoric Chupícuaro culture, located in Guanajuato, Mexico.

Collection history unknown; formerly in the collection of Franz Feuchtwanger (1918-1991, a collector/scholar of Mexican antiquities); acquired by MAI in 1969 through an exchange with the Robert Stolper Galleries (New York City, owned and operated by Robert L. Stolper).
