July 11
Today is National Bandoneon Day in Argentina. The bandoneon is a type of concertina invented by German instrument maker Heinrich Band. Following the influx of German and Italian immigrants to Argentina in the early 20th century, the bandoneon became a mainstay in tango bands. The bandoneon is so closely associated to Argentinian tango that it is widely regarded as a sort of national instrument.
