Orpheus is a legendary musician of classical Greek mythology who, among other feats, rescued his wife Eurydice from the underworld through his musical prowess. He is a frequent subject in art such as in this bronze sculpture by Ossip Zadkine, and in one of the first operas, L’Orfeo by Claudio Monteverdi, which premiered on this day in 1607.
