La Bohème is an opera composed by Giacomo Puccini, with an Italian libretto by Luigi Illica and Giuseppe Giacosa. It premiered in Turin on this day in 1896, conducted by Arturo Toscanini. The opera tells the story of a group of young artists and their relationships in 1830s Paris. La Bohème has become a standard of Italian opera and is one of the most performed operas in the world. It served as inspiration for the 1996 musical Rent.
