Unangan Balalaika

January 19

The balalaika is a Russian string instrument with a triangular body and three strings. This Unangan example comes from the Aleutian Islands in the Northern Pacific Ocean between Alaska and Russia. While the instrument retains the triangular shape and three strings, the body is more slender than usual and one of the strings runs to a tuning peg in the middle of the neck, perhaps functioning as a high-pitched drone string (like the fifth string on a banjo).
