Today marks the 30th anniversary of the death of folk musician Margaret Barry. Barry was born on New Year’s Day 1917 into a family of Irish Travellers, a distinct ethnic group within Ireland. She became widely renowned for her unique vocal style and banjo playing, particularly within the London folk scene of the 1950s and 1960s. In 1975, Folkways Records released "Margaret Barry and Michael Gorman," a collaboration between Barry and Irish fiddler Michael Gorman, which was recorded by Barbara Dane in the fall of 1965. Barry and Gorman also appeared at the 1965 Newport Folk Festival.
