- Award-winning singer-songwriter Irka Mateo, (Taíno and Dominican descent) creates original music inspired by popular music and Indigenous, Afro, and European rhythms. A predecessor of Dominican alternative music, she also incorporates Dominican rhythms, such as mangulina, carabiné, sarandunga, and congos, along with other Latin American genres, such as cumbia, compa, tango, and Afrobeat, into her compositions. She performed with her band, La Tirindanga, for a Indian Summer Concert in the Potomac Atrium of the National Museum of the American Indian on August 4, 2018.
