Behind his proper right shoulder stands a classical female figure in flowing robes, arms extended outward and upward in protective gesture. Her proper left hand supports a large American flag on an eagle-topped staff behind the soldier's proper left shoulder. Her sandaled proper left foot rests on a closed book (a symbol of Exeter, known as an education center). At her feet is a garland of poppies, laurel and oak.
