Object Details

Luce Center Label
An unknown artist painted this image of an Italian port in the eighteenth century. Many American artists traveled to Europe during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries to learn from the old-master paintings in the museums of Paris, London, and Rome. British and American clients bought images of distant landscapes and figures, and even artists who couldn’t afford to make the trip would copy the engravings and paintings of those who did.
