- The Shipman Manufacturing Company, Los Angeles, California, manufactured this postage stamp vending machine. Two holes in the back of the machine’s gray metal case could be used to mount it on a wall. A key at the top allowed for access to the machinery and for restocking stamps. The machine’s white-colored front has five coin slots at the top that correspond to five vertical pull levers and five stamp slots. A coin-return slot sits at the lower left. Windows to the left of the coin slots and above the levers enable the postage rates to be changed. The labels in this machine show that it was updated between December 31, 1975, and May 28, 1978, when the postcard mailing rate was nine cents and the rate for first-class letters weighing one ounce was thirteen cents.
