George C. Scott

Object Details

Exhibition Label
Time ran this cover and cover story of actor George C. Scott prior to the annual Academy Awards ceremony in April 1971. Scott was nominated for—and won—an Oscar for his dynamic performance in Patton (1970). The article made much of Scott’s “legendary capacity for booze, brawls and belligerence.” Scott’s gruff nature made him a natural to play the role of General George S. Patton, the brash and surly commander of the Third Army in World War II. Typical of Scott’s loathing for Hollywood glamour, he refused the Oscar, making him the first to decline the Best Actor award.
