Truman Capote

Object Details

Exhibition Label
Born New Orleans, Louisiana
Truman Capote vaulted to literary prominence in 1946 with his semi-autobiographical Other Voices, Other Rooms. In 1958, the year his novella Breakfast at Tiffany’s was published, he collaborated with photographer David Attie on a piece about Brooklyn Heights for Holiday magazine. While no portraits of Capote appear alongside the article, Attie did take several photographs of the author during their tour of the neighborhood. This one shows Capote on the landing of the “beautiful staircase floating upward in white” of the “yellow brick house on Willow Street,” where he leased two basement rooms.
In 1966 Capote published In Cold Blood, a tautly written account of the murder of a Kansas family. Calling the book a “nonfiction novel,” Capote, along with Norman Mailer, created a new form of American journalism. Thereafter, though, Capote became enmeshed in New York City’s high society and published only sporadically.
