Balance

Object Details

Description
This balance came from John Uri Lloyd (1849-1936), an American pharmacist, eclectic physician, and novelist. The pans are 9.75-inch diameter. The “J. WILBANK / PHILADA” inscription on both sides of the blackened brass beam is that of John Wilbank, a German immigrant who, in 1828, cast a new bell for the city of Philadelphia, to replace the Liberty Bell which had cracked while ringing out the celebration of Lafayette’s visit 1824. In 1840, Wilbank operated a brass and bell foundry; offered scales of every description; and ran a silk factory.
