Wheat Cap Lamp

Object Details

Description
This mining lamp was designed by Grant Wheat in 1916, as a precursor to his mass manufactured electric Wheat lamp. The lamp has a label that reads “First 'W' lamp, made by Grant Wheat, at his brother's residence, at Brie, Pennsylvania, in 1916.” The lamp appears to operate like many electric cap lamps, with a battery encased in a locking metal case worn on the miner’s belt and a cord to the cap lamp, which would be worn on the miner’s helmet. This lamp belonged to Grant Wheat’s personal collection that was donated to the museum in 1962.
