- Description
- Triangular medal given to Alexander McDannold (b. 1827), an Irish immigrant, iron worker, and inventor of the McDannold surgical chair. The obverse has two standing female figures and “UNIVERSAL EXPOSITION SAINT LOUIS UNITED STATES OF AMERICA / MCMIV.” The reverse has an eagle, two dolphins, and “GOLD MEDAL / LOUISIANA PURCHASE / EXPOSITION.” The medal was designed by the German-American sculptor, Adolph Alexander Weinman (1870-1952), and struck at the U.S. Mint in Philadelphia.
