- Description
- Ruth M. Strang (1895-1971), Marion A. Brown (1894-1983), and Dorothy C. Stratton (1899-2006) prepared this examination for junior and senior high school students to test their knowledge of proper social usage. It consists of a list of one hundred statements about social situations, each followed by a blank. Students were to mark whether the stated behavior was appropriate (if so, they put a “+” in the blank), or inappropriate (if so, they inserted a “0”). The test was published by Teachers College of Columbia University in 1933. By the time of the second edition of the test, it could include a reference to a book on etiquette coauthored by Stratton.
- Strang received her undergraduate degree (1922), masters of arts diploma (1924) and doctorate (1926) from Columbia, rising gradually on the faculty of Teachers College. Stratton became Dean of Women at Purdue University and, during World War II, directed the Women’s Reserve of the U.S. Coast Guard. She went on to serve as the first director of personnel at the International Monetary Fund and later as Executive Director of the Girl Scouts of America. Marion Agnes Brown who was born in California, did undergraduate work at the University of California at Berkeley, taught in the Oakland, California, schools, received her PhD. from Teachers College in 1933, and then worked in Oakland to as “dean of girls” and later vice-principal at University High School.
