Nürnberger Violin Bow

Object Details

Description

This bow was made by Franz Albert (II) Nürnberger in Markneukirchen, Germany, around 1898-1902. It is violin bow, with an octagonal reddish-orange Pernambuco stick with and ivory face, full silver mounted ebony frog with figured pearl eyes, and an ebony button with silver rings and pearl eye. The bow is stamped:

*ALBERT NURNBERGER*

The Nürnberger family of bowmakers was established in the mid-18th century in Markneukirchen, Saxony. Franz Albert II, (1854-1931), one of the greatest German bowmakers, founded a business in 1880 which became the foremost bow shop in Germany. This example with silver-mounted ebony frog is typical of the standards of his output.
