Object Details
- Description
- Plastic model of a human eyeball enlarged approximately four times. The model shows sections of the eyeball cut away in layers to illustrate the internal structure. Different parts of the eyeball are numbered, but the index for this model was not included with the object.
- The model was used by ophthamologist Dr. Patricia E. Bath (1942-2019), who developed and patented a device for treating cataracts. The device, known as the Laserphaco Probe, was patented in 1988 (see US Patent # 4,744,360 for an "Apparatus for ablating and removing cataract lenses").
- The model was made in Germany by Marcus Sommer, SOMSO Werkstaetten, a family-run business that began making anatomical models in 1876.
