- Description
- Figural andiron featuring a human head or mask atop a fluted, tapered pier or flattened column on arched, squared cabriole legs with a scrolling vine in relief at top center and a round drop below. Entire andiron is a single, two-part casting, with the cast billet bar inserted into and fused to the puddle-cast upright when poured. Billet bar has two legs. No marks. One of a pair, 1983.0808.01A-B.
- Possibly made at the Redwell-Isabella Furnace, located along Hawksbill Creek, near Luray, Page County, VA. Dirck (also Derick or Derrick) Pennypacker established Redwell Furnace in 1786 or 1787. It was later sold to Benjamin Blackford in 1808 and renamed Isabella Furnace sometime after that. Date range for these andirons encompasses both names. The site remained in operation until circa 1880.
