- Description
- Bakelite helmet with inscription reading “M.S.A. Skullgard / Protective Hat - Type K / Size 7 ¼.” The Mine Safety Appliances Company was established in Pittsburgh in 1914, two years after a particularly deadly mine disaster in West Virginia. Its first product, developed with the help of Thomas A. Edison, was an electric cap lamp. The firm introduced the term “Skullgard” in 1932.
