- John W. Barney’s promotions were well documented as he rose in rank with the 1st Delaware Volunteers. On March 3, 1863, Barney was appointed to the position of sergeant major of Company F. On June 23, 1864, Barney was rose to second lieutenant of Company B. On September 4, 1864, he was advanced to first lieutenant. John Barney’s last promotion occurred on January 1, 1865, when he was promoted to the role of captain for Company B.
