- First Lieutenant George W. Halstead, carte-de-visite, by unknown photographer, c.1860s
- At age of twenty, George W. Halstead enlisted on October 14, 1861, in New York City. He was mustered in as a private for Company G, of the 10th New York Volunteers, for three years of service. On December 1, 1861, Halstead was promoted to corporal. He was further promoted on August 13, 1862, to the rank of sergeant. On April 26, 1863, he was transferred to Company D, and the following day, was mustered in as second lieutenant. His final promotion occurred on May 18, 1864, when he became a first lieutenant. With his company, Halstead was mustered out of service on June 30, 1865, at Munson’s Hill, Virginia. He was also the chief of pioneers for the 3rd Brig. 2nd Div., 2nd Corps, which meant he was responsible for clearing paths for the troops to move with ease.
