- First Lieutenant Charles W. (CW) Cowtan, carte-de-visite, by Julius Brill, New York, c.1860s
- Charles W. (C. W.) Cowtan, who was also recorded as Charles W. Cowlan, served with the 10th New York Volunteers. He enlisted on April 26, 1861, in New York City, at age nineteen. The following day, he was mustered in as a private for Company A, for two years of service.
- As the war progressed, Charles Cowtan was promoted several times. His first promotion occurred on October 12, 1861, when he became a sergeant. Nine months later, on July 12, 1862, he was promoted to commissary-sergeant. He was mustered in as a second lieutenant for Company K, on February 23, 1863; and finally first lieutenant on June 5, 1865. He was mustered out with his regiment, on June 30, 1865, at Munson’s Hill, Virginia.
