- Description (Brief)
- Official Souvenir Program for the 1948 Olympic Games held in London. The 1948 Summer Olympic Games, also known as the Games of the XIV Olympiad were held in London, England and included 59 countries, 3,714 men and 390 women athletes participating. These Games were the first held after the outbreak of World War II, with Germany and Japan not asked to participate. As in 1932, most venues and athlete’s housing were existing and rationing of food and gas from the war was still on-going. The Olympic swimming pool, however, was the first used in Olympic competition to be covered. The 1948 Games were the first to be broadcast on television although televisions were not commonplace in most households. American Bob Mathias won the decathlon at seventeen, becoming the youngest male to win Olympic gold. The United States won the medal count with 84.
