- The Jarvik 2000 FlowMaker is a heart pump designed to assist a weakened heart circulate blood the body. The device has several components which includes the internal battery-powered axial-flow pump made from titanium, the external controller, battery pack, cabels and connectors. In 2005, the Jarvik 2000 was approved for clinical trials by the United States Food and Drug Administration as a bridge to transplant, buying time for patients waiting a donor heart for transplantation.
- In Europe the Jarvik 2000 has been successfully used for permanent lifetime circulatory support. Peter Houghton, 69 of Birmingham, England is the longest surviving patient living the diminutive heart pump. Houghton's miniature pump was surgically implanted seven years ago.
- Dr. Robert Jarvik has been inventing medical devices since he was in highschool. He became a household name in 1982, when the artificial heart that bears his name, the Jarvik-7 was implanted in dentist Barney Clark. The Jarvik-7 was a total artificial heart that replaced the patient's diseased natural heart. December 2, 2007 marks the twenty-fifth anniversary of this historic operation.
- The acquisition of the Jarvik 2000 represents the an evolution in Jarvik's philosophy of severe cardiac care. Twenty-five years ago Barney Clark was destined to live the remainder of his life tethered to an enormous console supplying energy to keep his artificial heart pumping. today miniaturization permits patients like Houghton a better quality of life away from the hospital.
