- Texas entrepreneur Ross Perot ran as an independent in the 1992 presidential election against President George H.W. Bush (Republican) and Arkansas Governor Bill Clinton (Democrat). Although he finished third behind Clinton and Bush, Perot received just under 19% of the popular vote making him the most successful non-major party candidate since Theodore Roosevelt in 1912.
