Fertility Calculator

Object Details

Description
Fertility calculator with “SCIENTIFIC INSTRUMENTS / INC. / FORT WAYNE, IND.” and “COPYRIGHT 1933 / ALL RIGHTS RESERVED” inscriptions. Advertisements termed this “a slide rule which calculates accurately the sterile and fertile cycles according to the Ogino-Knaus-Rhythm theory.” When faced with evidence presented to the Supreme Court, in 1942, the firm admitted that “according to the weight of reliable medical opinion at present, no method of calculating such periods can be relied on.”
The underlying information was developed in the 1920s by Kyusaku Ogino, a Japanese gynecologist, and Hermann Knaus, from Austria.
