- A silver gelatin portrait photograph of W. E. B. Du Bois, captured in the summer of 1946 in New York. Seated facing left in front of heavily patterned wallpaper, W. E. B. DuBois is photographed wearing a striped suit jacket, white collared shirt, a plaid necktie and a black ribbon at his neck. Inscribed in black ink across his proper left jacket lapel, near the bottom right of the photograph, is: [Very sincerely / W. E. B. DuBois]. Stamped in white ink at the bottom right of the photograph is: [PHOTOHRAPH BY / CARL VAN VECHTEN].
- On the reverse of the photograph is an ink inscription [W. E. B. DuBois, and the photographer’s stamp: [PHOTOGRAPH BY CARL VAN VECHTEN / 101 CENTRAL PARK WEST / CANNOT BE REPRODUCED WITHOUT PERMISSION].
