- The photograph on this postcard was taken by Arthur P. Bedou. Bedou was an American documentary and portrait photographer based in New Orleans. For nearly seven decades (1899-1966) Bedou photographed both everyday life and national events. He is most well-known for his images of New Orleans, Booker T. Washington, Tuskegee Institute, Xavier University of Louisiana, jazz bands, and photographs for The Louisiana Weekly and The Times-Picayune.
- Description
- A hand-tinted photographic postcard of Tantum Hall at the Tuskegee Institute. The postcard depcits Tantum Hall, a large rectangular brick building with a portico on one side and a porch on the left side, sitting on a hill and framed by green lawns and trees. The portico has six tall white columns topped by a triangular pediment. The porch is also white and has stairs that leads down to the lawn. Along the bottom is a narrow white margin with the words [TANTUM HALL -TUSKEGEE INSTITUTE, ALA. Hand-colored] printed in black ink. In the bottom left corner are the words [Copyright 19007 by / Arthur P. Bedou / N.O.] printed in white ink. The back of the photographic postcard is unused and has [POST CARD] printed in black at the top and blank spaces for [CORRESPONDENCE] and [ADDRESS ONLY]. In the upper right corner, there is a stamp box with dashes. The back also has printed information about the photographer Arthur P. Bedou.
