- A page from Harper's Weekly with a black-and-white print of a wood engraving depicting a uniformed figure representing the Freedmen's Bureau at center holding out his hand to stop a group of white men from advancing on a group of Black men. The two groups face each other from opposite sides of the image, with figures on both sides holding guns and other weapons. A United States flag hangs from a building in the background. Along the bottom of the image is printed "THE FREEDMEN'S BUREAU. - DRAWN BY A.R. WAUD. - [SEE PAGE 467.]." Along the left margin is printed "JULY 23, 1868." at the bottom, "HARPER'S WEEKLY" at center and "473" at top.
