Receiver Deck B, Encapsulated, Explorer 1

Object Details

Summary
This object is a component from the primary backup payload inventory for what flew as Explorer 1. Built originally as a payload for Vanguard, this object was part of the effort of redesign to make the instrument compatible as a payload for Explorer. It includes electronic and mechanical elements of the initial "Deal" payloads designed and built by the University of Iowa. These components are original and have been in George Ludwig's possession since they were built in the late 1950s, with the exception of intervals when the components were used at JPL. Donated by Dr. George Ludwig in 2006.
