Large Jar

Object Details

Description
A large, wheel-made, rounded vessel of gray/yellow/white earthenware. The large, open mouth has a thick, slightly out-flaring rim. The body slopes down to a ring foot, and at the upper shoulder, ther is a pronounced ridge. The jar is decorated with a gray/black slip pinat on the upper body and shoulder. Above the shoulder ridge, is a register of alternating birds and linear/geometric designs. Beneath, the ridge are concentric bands of wavy and straight lines.
Stephen P. Koob writes, "Scattered small chips are missing from around the rim and the ridge around the body. Severe exfoliation of the original surface has occurred on the interior, and combined with some white efflorescence on the lower body, indicates the probability of soluble salt contamination. Under the microscope, one of the birds appears to have been repainted, but it is unclear if it were done recently, or during manufacture." May 26, 1998.
