Object Details

Catalogue Status
Research in Progress
Description
Landscape study of a tall cliff face in the Mountains of Edom near Petra, in present-day Jordan. This bulging, rocking prominence dominates the composition at center and is characterized by its sheer cliffs at right and center. Several gullies, pinnacles, and rock strata are variously rendered thoughout the cliffs. Possible architectural carvings are visible at the base of the cliffs, at center.
Verso: Possibly unfinished landscape sketch showing rocky slopes and mountainsides in Petra, in present-day Jordan. A tall, round pillar is visible at left, with a doorway or frame carved into the rock below at right.
