- Description
- Seascape sketches showing views of ships in the waters off the coast of Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. The composition is divided into two scenes--one at lower right and another comprising the upper portion of the leaf. In the upper half, a large steamship is viewed in left profile as its smoke stack spews white steam, and its sails are raised. A smaller, green ship two masts is situated beside it at left and is viewed obliquely from the rear. In the foreground at center, a rowboat with two figures is shown in right profile. In the background, a distant steamship appears as a dot on the horizon while its smoke plume wafts and disseminates in the atmosphere above it. Above, blue sky is somewhat visible through hazy clouds. The second view in the lower right corner possibly shows that same, distant steamship, whose smoke plume now drifts dramatically to the left. The sea and sky alike are rendered in tones of brownish-grey.
