Collection history unknown, but said to have been collected between 1870 and 1880 from a Sioux Indian; formerly in the collection of Lewis Hotchkiss Brittin (1877-1952, a noted collector of books and Indian arts and founder of Northwest Airlines); purchased by George Heye from L.H. Brittin in 1906.
