- Acquired by Episcopal missionary Sybil Carter (1842-1908) during her work with Native communities in Minnesota to teach lacemaking; given by Sybil Carter to Grace Nicholson (1877-1948, a California basket collector and dealer), probably circa 1904 when lacemaking was introduced to California Native communities; inherited by Grace Nicholson's assistant Thyra Maxwell (1903-1972); purchased by MAI from Thyra Maxwell in 1968.
