Collection History
Formerly owned by Wa-Na-Ta (Wanata [The Charger], Yanktonnai Nakota, ca. 1795-1848); acquired by C. P. Burroughs (of the British Army) before 1837; formerly in the collection of Indian art collector David T. Vernon (1900-1973); acquired by MAI in 1967, possibly through an exchange with the Jackson Hole Preserve, Inc. (a foundation backed by the Rockefeller family), which purchased Vernon's entire collection in 1965.
