Collected in the early 1900s by J. Louis Schaefer (1867-1927, a New York City banker with financial interests in Latin America) during travel to South America; inherited by his wife, Susan Karsch Schaefer (1872-1955); donated to MAI in 1956 by their children: J. Louis Schaefer, Jr. (1898-1981), Kathryn Schafer Gerdau (Mrs. Carl Gerdau, 1900-1964), Susan Grace Schaefer Sandblom (Mrs. John Philip Sandblom, 1907-1994); and Bernhard K. Schaefer (1897-1985).
