Collection history unknown, but said to have been collected in 1857; formerly in the collection of Stephen Hyatt Pelham Pell (1874-1950), a historian, collector, and founder of the Fort Ticonderoga Museum in Ticonderoga, New York; acquired by MAI through an exchange with Stephen Pell in 1937.
