Collection History
Formerly owned by Chief Sitting Bull (Tatanka Iyotanka, Hunkpapa Lakota, ca. 1831-1890); purchased after Sitting Bull's death from his widow by Indian Agent James McLaughlin; subsequently acquired by T. S. Lowe at an unknown date; purchased from the T. S. Lowe estate by William M. Fitzhugh (1853-1929, a San Francisco collector) at an unknown date; purchased by MAI from the estate of William M. Fitzhugh in 1936.
