- Formerly owned by Chief Spotted Tail (Sinte Gleska, Sicangu Lakota, 1823-1881); acquired from him by Charles G. Sawtelle (1834-1913, then a second lieutenant in the US Army's 6th Infantry and later a brigadier general) shortly after Spotted Tail surrendered at Fort Laramie in 1855; purchased by MAI from General Sawtelle's son Captain Edmund Munroe Sawtelle (1891-1947) in 1930.
