- Collection history unknown, but said to have been collected on December 30, 1890 from the site of the Wounded Knee Massacre in South Dakota by C.B. Latimer of the US Army's Seventh Cavalry; sold to Abel E. Brooks (1833-1917, a renowned collector of Civil War firearms) or an intermediate party on April 20, 1891 when Latimer was stationed at Fort Riley, Kansas; acquired by George Heye from an unknown source in 1906.
