- Collection History
- Formerly owned by First Sergeant Alexander Brown (1844-1884) of Company G of the US Army's Seventh Cavalry and used to record duty rosters and other information as the 7th Cavalry travelled from Louisiana to Montana between April and June 1876; dropped or lost by Sergeant Brown during the Battle of the Little Bighorn (the Battle of Greasy Grass Creek), June 25 and 26, 1876; recovered from the battlefield by Northern Cheyenne combatants and used by High Bull (Frank High Bull, Northern Cheyenne, ca. 1848-1876) and others for drawings; recovered from Dull Knife's village by First Sergeant James H. Turpin (1846-1893) of Company L of the US Army's Fifth Cavalry after the Dull Knife Fight (the Battle of Bates Creek) on the Powder River in Wyoming Territory on November 25, 1876; given by Sergeant Turpin to Lieutenant Homer W. Wheeler (1848-1930) of Company G of the US Army's Fifth Cavalry soon afterward; donated by Homer Wheeler to the Military Service Institution of the United States (an Army officers' organization with a library and museum in New York City) before 1884; removed from the collection of the Military Service Institution and acquired by John Jay White (1860-1923, a New York City banker and collector of Indian objects) by 1898; lent to MAI by John Jay White in 1921; donated to MAI in 1925 by his widow, Grace Hoffman White (Virginia Grace Hoffman, 1862-1937). Because it was captured and then recaptured from its previous owners, it is often called the "Double Trophy Roster Book."
